Leek Tennis club are preparing for their new season after a winter of changes at the club. Following on from last year’s highly successful season which included two promotions and a number of promising juniors emerging to play key roles in the clubs team structure, the club will this year run more teams than ever before in leagues across the county.
The club will once again have 5 teams in the City and Suburban tennis league including the return of the clubs ladies after a one year break. The club will also run a B team in the Staffordshire County League. The team which will be captained by the experienced Ian Sales will feature a number of the club’s most promising junior players, offering the chance for them to further develop and play tennis of a higher level. The new B team will begin their season away at Draycott on Tuesday 4th April and then play their first home match of the season three days later at Leek’s, Abbey View home ground on Friday night.
Friday night home matches will be a feature of the 2017 season with both the club’s county league teams playing regular friday night fxtures. The clubs A team, which will be spear headed by men’s doubles champions Rich Smith and Dave Williamson, start their season away at Walton on the 12th May.
As well as expanding the clubs team structure, the three hard courts at the club will be renovated this spring, to continue the clubs policy of regular investment in its facilities.
The club have also announced that the experienced and hugely successful Secretary/Chairman pairing of Brenda Piggott and Colin Kinshott have stepped down from the helm after nearly 20 years of leading the club. A club spokesman said “I speak for everybody at the club when we extend our thanks to both Brenda and Colin for all their hard work and input over the last couple of decades. The club would not be where it is today without their work. No tribute can cover their significant achievements. These have included overseeing two major refurbishment programmes of the club’s facilities, as well as the building of a 5th court in 2007.” The pair will be succeeded by club stalwart Frank Murray as Chairman and A Team Captain David Williamson as Secretary.
The club continue to welcome new members of all ages and abilities, with anyone interested in trying tennis for free should contact the club by email, email@example.com or search for the club on Facebook.
